Planning your perfect vacation - Saving $ towards your vacation

Saving for your vacation is much like saving for other important purchases.  You save for a new car and a new appliance, so why not a vacation?

The hard part of saving for a vacation is getting started.  After you read this GET STARTED and do not hesitate.

Here are some tips that can help to sock that money away and get you to your dream vacation:

1. Plan early.
Preparing a year (or two) ahead of your vacation is not too soon. Saving this far ahead will allow you time to save up and plan thoroughly without feeling the pinch.

2. Set a budget.
As with any other large purchases, setting your budget will give you a goal to work toward.

3. Open an account.
Open a savings account dedicated solely to your vacation. Make sure there are low fees (or better yet, no fees) and ensure that you contribute on a regular basis.  Talk to your employer.  Can you do an automatic deduction right into your account from your pay?

4. Start a money jar.
Get the family involved in vacation planning by having everyone contribute to the money jar.  Put loose change in the jar.  Get into a habit of contributing to the jar if you save money at an event.  Do you get gift money for birthdays or anniversaries?  Put that money in the jar as well.  In no time your jar will be full and you will have to either deposit the money into your vacation savings account or start a new jar.
