Top 5 Tips to protect against the elements on your vacation

Nothing can ruin a vacation faster than a sunburn, a cut on the foot or itchy insect bites.

When planning to go on vacation you must remember the certain basic tips to protect you and your family.

By remembering these tips you are better prepared to deal with the elements and ensure that your vacation is the best it can be.

1. Protect against sunburn
Sunburns are the number one reason of ruining a vacation for travelers.  The sun is extremely hot especially in tropical areas and for the traveler who is not used to being outside so much it is hard on their skin.  Sun tan lotion is a must for vacations.  It is highly recommended that a minimum of SPF 30 is used and reused during your stay.  Be generous and frequent with your sun tan lotion for best protection.  Remember the sun is the hottest between 10 am and 4 pm so if you are out in the sun, coverup, where plenty of lotion and even wear a hat.

2. Protect your eyes
The sun’s UV rays can do serious damage to your eyelids, cornea, and other parts of the eye. It’s very important to look for sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays for effective eye protection. If the labels on sun glasses don't provide details about the UV protection they provide, don't buy them.

3. Protect your body by hydrating
Sunstroke is not a pleasant experience for anyone let alone someone on vacation.  Drinking plenty of water during the day will keep your body performing at its best.  All inclusive resorts that provide free alcohol are a prime example of where you can get dehydrated.  A good rule of thumb is to drink water every hour to help with the hydration.

4. Protect yourself from insect bites
Never go away on vacation without bringing insect repellent.  Mosquitoes, sand fleas, ticks or other biting insects can bite you and cause irritating itchy skin, or even worse insect-borne diseases.  Check with your local health board for more information on what would be the best type to bring with you.

5. Protect your feet
Finally, there is nothing worse than exploring a city with blisters on your foot, walking along a beach and stepping on a broken shell and cutting your foot to really put a damper on your trip.  If you plan on doing a lot of walking bring worn in walking shoes.  If you do a lot of beach walking, bring sandals or water shoes.  I personally bring two pairs of sandals.  If one pair seems to be giving me a blister I switch to the other pair.
